An interesting scam appeared very recently since it may be a poor version of more advanced ones to come. Here is how it appeared and how it works.

What is that

A month ago they created the ANN on Bitcointalk with a rather weird description. As OP’s description, official comments barely make sense and some of the users interacting in the thread may be fake ones. On their fake website, the team also seems to be entirely fake. Note that the founder’s email is hello@cryp… and that the only social profile available is a very likely to be fake a Facebook account.

The weird description

“Cryptonex is a global, decentralized cryptocurrency of new generation. It is created on its own blockchain platform. The main goal is to give the opportunity to exchange any world’s currencies for any cryptocurrencies and tokens, buy goods and services using mobile phones and payment cards. Instantly, with minimum commission. Join us! Together we will help to develop the blockchain and make the world comfortable and technological.Cryptonex is being created by international team of Investment Financial Group, which main specialization is software development for financial markets. ECN broker with interbank market access, aggregator of providers’ liquidity for HFT trading, investment portfolio systems, PAMM accounts and much more have been developed by Investment Financial Group. The team considers 210,000,000 coins as optimal and maximum possible number of coins. 85,000,000 CNX will be the emission for free circulation via pre-sale, website and exchanges. 15,000,000 CNX will be used for Bounty Program. The Cryptonex team owns 5,000,000 CNX. Cryptocurrency in the amount of about 100,000,000 CNX will provide liquidity while acquiring.”

Their official video is hilarious, especially when they compare the price of the token to the price of a Dash or Ethereum coin. Their whitepaper makes obviously no sense and they have almost no presence on social medias. They have a Telegram though, but you can’t talk on it (which can make it seems like it is a legit announcement group).

How it works

It appears that they have created a smart contract which you can find here:

They propose on their website that you buy their tokens by creating an account. When I did so, the confirmation email landed directly in my scam directory. In the email, I found a link I didn’t dare to follow.

They also propose wallets: Please do not download and/or install any Cryptonex wallet. It is most probably a very bad idea.

Endless fun

All of this seems amateurish but they actually have their own full featured fake explorer! Another fun thing is that they recently sent packets of 1000 tokens to a lot of ETH addresses (like you can see on the Etherscan link above). I actually wrote this article because one of our fellow readers alerted us in our Telegram group (you can click here, you’re safe ^^). He isn’t the only one to wonder about that suspicious airdrop, there is already a few days old Reddit thread about it.

Surprisingly, this scam is also listed on well-known listings like Coinschedule, Icotracker and even Cryptocompare.

So why releasing tokens randomly (or not: they maybe sent tokens to ETH addresses which already participated in ICOs) and being added to ICOs listings? I’m not sure, but maybe they wish to be listed on decentralized exchanges like Etherdelta, which actually may happen depending on how tight/loose are the rules to add a token on these exchanges.

Cryptonex is quite a blatant scam, but more advanced ones may be less easy to read, so be careful and feel free to join us to build a safer market!

Thanks to Manu Tora for alerting us about this.

  1. Thank you for the warning I invested £200 but have not yet set up an account sadly I checked your site after talking to a Jonathan Vargas.
They advertise showing Dragons Den promoting bit coin but then after you speak a person you are passed to a so called trader.
I don’t know if I have lost my money.
I just want a sound investment I am not after being rich.
And funnily enough I got a spam from someone who picked up my password I had given them threatening if I didn’t give them 1,000 bit coins they will put nude photo’s of me on the Internet, I am 69 don’t know where they are going to get pictures from.
obviously feel a fool but if others can be warned about them, good

  2. Cryptonxt is scam please stay way far as you can, because you won’t be able to withdraw your money. I have invested $51,000 and I traded and gain profit up to 157,000 and now I’m trying to withdraw money but they gave me the running round , I have spoken with 4 account managers names are Ross Malon, Jonathan Evans, Craig Johnson,James Hamiton and they all never responded. However, I was only able to recover all my money through the help of “ regalrefunder@gm-a-i-l.c-o-m”  He is a professional recovery agent, and he is very good at his job. Is there anyone else who is having difficulty withdraw money from any of this scam companies, I advice you contact him through the email.
